There may be many Dream Jackpot members who class themselves as fans of Blackjack but how many of you know the history behind the game.
Blackjack is the age old name that also sometimes goes by the name of 21 or Pontoon and is usually played across a 52 card deck and is one of the most played casino games in the world. Players play against a sole dealer and do not play against each other.
The first mention of the game Blackjack in popular culture was in a short-story from 1601 by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes her explained the aim of the game as to reach 21 points without going over this amount. In its earlier days the game struggled to gain traction in the United States so dealers in the old saloons of the Wild West decided to add their own spin onto the game. Bonus pay-outs of 10/1 were paid on hands that consisted of the ace of spades and either the jack of spades or the jack of clubs. This hand came to be knows as a ‘Blackjack’. Despite this hand not remaining the whole sentiment of the game, the name stuck and thus continued to be named this until present day.
Many players throughout the history of blackjack have attempted to beat the game, some have been successful, and some have wrote detailed book strategizing with a fine comb the ins and outs of the game. The term ‘counting cards’ is a phrase that springs up routinely in the casino world. In house and live casinos now play with multiple decks to safeguard against the counting of cards and many virtual casinos incorporate multi-deck algorithms to prevent this sort of criminal activity.
The rules of Blackjack are fairly simple, players must attempt to gain a hand of 21 or as close as without going bust. Or at least beat the dealer’s hand. This means that if the dealer had a hand of 12, and you 13, even though this is quite a poor hand the player would win. Card values are set at the value of the card with Jacks, Queens, and Kings valued at 10. Aces are also valued at either 1 or 11 depending on what suits your hand. Any hand above 21 means you are bust and the dealer wins. The dealer will never double, split, or surrender meaning the only way to beat the dealer is for them to go bust, or for the player to achieve a higher hand.
Players can split their hand if they are dealt two cards of the same value, this is perhaps the best outcome if you receive two 8s. Alternatively players are given the option to double their wager if they feel confident of their hand. For example, if a player has a hand of 11 and doubled their wager and the next card to be drawn was a 10, they’d have a hand of 21 with the winnings doubled. The negative effects of doubling your wager is that you can’t hit or stand following this procedure, meaning that you must settle for a negative hand if that’s what arises.
Winnings are paid out at a ratio of 1:1 except for the Blackjack which is the highest hand on the game. This can be achieved by gaining a hand of an ace and a jack, a queen, or a king.
